The Suicide Squad director James Gunn has debuted a new behind-the-scenes photo of Bloodsport actor Idris Elba helping to film the latest silver screen DC adventure. As the most recent installment in the DCEU, the film once again sees Task Force X sent on a dangerous mission in a quest to save the world and (hopefully) survive and get time taken off of their prison sentences. It has been out for a full week at this point and has thus far received rave reviews.
The Suicide Squad picks up some time after the events of David Ayer’s original and puts the titular ensemble into the hands of Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn. In Gunn’s take on the story, the group of misfit DC villains are sent on a mission to Corto Maltese to take down a mysterious weapon known as “Project Starfish.” A far cry from the typical DC heroes, the film follows Bloodsport (Idris Elba), Peacemaker (John Cena), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), and several others as they attempt to destroy the bizarre experiment taking place on the island nation and save the day.
Now that the film has debuted, James Gunn has started revealing numerous behind-the-scenes photos from The Suicide Squad. One of the most recent is from the Belle Reve section of the movie and sees Idris Elba playing with one of the film’s experimental cameras and quite literally helping to film the movie. One other interesting thing to note about the above photo is that, by James Gunn’s own admission, Idris Elba is using a brand-new type of camera in those photos. Called the Nano rig, the camera was used to shoot the introduction sequence of Daniela Melchior’s Ratcatcher 2 and her trusty companion, Sebastian. The extent to which the camera was used elsewhere in the film isn’t fully known at this time, but according to Gunn, it was created by Dave Freeth. A crewmember on The Suicide Squad, Freeth also pioneered camera equipment on films like 1917, as well as Gunn’s own film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
Although The Suicide Squad is already out in theaters and getting rave reviews among critics, it’s exciting and encouraging to see how much James Gunn still wants to talk about the film. The director has made it clear that he wants to return to the DC well at some point, and it’s obvious that his enthusiasm for these characters has not waned. At this time, it’s unclear what his future looks like in the DC universe beyond the Peacemaker spinoff series, but one could assume that he could do almost anything and audiences would likely love it. The Suicide Squad is out in theaters and available on HBO Max.
